How will a shutdown impact Mounds View Public Schools?

June 29, 2011 -- As a government shutdown appears increasingly likely, many have wondered what it will mean specifically for Mounds View Public Schools. Here is what our district is planning for the near future.

  • All summer school programs for students will continue as normal.
  • School facilities will remain open based on regular summer schedules.
  • Community Education programs will continue as expected.
  • Employees will continue to receive compensation as normal.

What about school funding?

Mounds View's revenues will not be impacted unless the Legislature takes action to reduce education appropriations. A recent court ruling regarding the temporary funding of core government functions during a shutdown states that the Minnesota constitution requires a "general and uniform system of public schools." This provision makes funding education a critical core function of government.  Consequently, it appears that education aid payments will continue to flow to school districts.

If we experience delayed cash payments, the District will utilize existing cash reserves to continue normal operations as long as possible. If necessary, Mounds View Public Schools will explore short-term borrowing options.
