How long has the program been in place?
The Reading Buddies program in Mounds View Public Schools began in 1997.

How many schools in the district participate?
For the 2007-2008 school year, the program is in place at five elementary schools: Pinewood, Sunnyside, Turtle Lake, Bel Air and Valentine Hills.

Who sponsors the program?
Mounds View Community Education, businesses and individuals from the area.

How are students selected for the program?
Teachers may refer students to the program. The size of the program is limited only by the number of mentors we can find.

Can I refer my own child to the program?
You may talk to your child's teacher about the Reading Buddies program.

Is training provided?
Each volunteer participates in a reading strategies training session, receives a packet of materials, and meets with his or her student's teacher before beginning weekly meetings with the student. You don't need any specialized background to be a Reading Buddy.

What is the time commitment required?
After the training meetings, you will meet with your student once a week for one hour. The program starts a few weeks after the beginning of the school year and ends the last week of April . You and your student's teacher will check in with each other periodically, and you will be asked to complete an evaluation at the end of the program.
