Service Learning

2007-2008 Service Learning Projects

The Vision
Our vision is that every student (K-12) will have at least one opportunity per year to do a Service Learning project. Each project would reflect the ability of the grade level.

Definition
Service Learning is a teaching strategy that enriches learning by engaging students in meaningful service to their schools and communities. Students apply academic skills to solving real-world issues, linking established learning objectives with genuine needs. Students apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills to concerns such as hunger, pollution, and diversity.
"Service-learning is education in action." -Sen. John Glenn

Mounds View District Service Learning
Teachers who participate in Service Learning will receive training. Teachers, along with their students, develop a Service Learning project that is tailored to meet specific learning goals of their curriculum and meet community needs. Teachers are able to access some funding to reimburse expenses of the project.

Examples of Service Learning Projects from Mounds View School District
-Fourth graders learn about nutrition, map skills, following detailed directions and letter writing while delivering Meals On Wheels to local senior citizens.
-Fourth graders and high school students learned about hunger and global awareness working with Feed My Starving Children.
-Middle school students who have ADHD, researched the disease and mentored/helped work with elementary students who also have ADHD.
-Middle school students provide cross-age tutoring to elementary students.
-Middle school students made speeches, developed a website, wrote letters, learned social studies vocabulary and gained global awareness while raising $12,300 for the Kwa Kasolo Water Project in Kenya.
-High School Students help build affordable housing for Senior Citizens through Habitat for humanity.
-H20 For Life
