English Language Learners

English Learner (EL) is a program that provides instruction in language arts and other subjects for students whose first language is not English. The purpose of the EL program is to bring students' English language skills to a level where they can be on par with same grade peers in our general education classrooms. EL instruction is available at all schools within our district.

How are children identified as English Learners (EL)?  All families that enroll a student in Mounds View Public Schools complete a Home Language Questionnaire. If a family's home language is other than English, your student will be assessed with the W-APT to determine whether or not the student qualifies for English learner instruction. If a student qualifies for services, a Parent Notification Letter is sent home that includes the student's proficiency level along with additional program information. Parents have the right to withdraw their child from EL services and testing at any time by providing written notification to the school.

Where do EL students receive services?  All students receive services at their home school of enrollment.
