Why Rabbits Have Long Ears?
A Mayan Folk Tale
Illustrated by Clive Taylor
Adapted and Acted by:
Rabbit – Chris F, 4th grade
Long Nose – Andy M, 4th grade
Wise One – Mrs. Gloege

Wise One: Once upon a time there was a Rabbit and a Elephant named Long Nose.
Long Nose: I want to marry Princess Elephant.
Rabbit: I want to marry Princess Elephant too!
Long Nose: Climb on my back and I will take you to see Princess Elephant.
Rabbit: OK, let’s go.
Wise One: So off they went to see Princess Elephant. Rabbit rode on Long Noses’s back all the way to the castle.
Long Nose: I am very tired. Climb off my back, we are here!
Rabbit: Thank you
Wise One: Both Long Nose and Rabbit asked…….
Long Nose and Rabbit: Will you marry me?
Wise One: The Princess said she could not marry both Long Nose and Rabbit. Rabbit was too small and his teeth are too tiny. The Princess could not marry Rabbit.
Rabbit: I am small and have small teeth. I will go to see Wise One to get bigger and then I will come back to marry you.
Wise One: Rabbit, what do you want?
Rabbit: I want you to make me bigger so I can marry Princess Elephant.
Wise One: Let me think….OK….you need to go and get one tooth from a monkey, iguana and two lions to show how strong you are. Bring the teeth back to me and I will make you bigger.
Long Nose: Rabbit went to monkey’s house first to get a tooth.
Rabbit: Do you want a shave? I will be fast.
Long Nose: The monkey said, “OK, but make sure it does not take too long.” The monkey got cut by the razor and begged for a bandaid.
Rabbit: I will give you a bandaid if you give me one of your teeth. One down, two to go!!
Long Nose: Next Rabbit went to see iguana.
Rabbit: Iguana, would you like to play catch?
Long Nose: Iguana agreed to a quick game of catch. Rabbit threw the ball and Iguana caught it in his teeth. Then Rabbit switched the ball with a rock and threw it to Iguana. The rock knocked out a tooth. Rabbit grabbed the tooth.
Rabbit: Two down, one to go!!
Long Nose: Rabbit went to the lions’ house.
Rabbit: You are a good boxer. Can you show me some of your boxing moves?
Long Nose: The lions agreed as long as it does not take too long. The lions charged at each other, bumped their heads together and were knocked out. Rabbit ran over and pulled one tooth from one of the lions mouths.
Rabbit: Three down. I am going to see Wise One.
Wise One: Do you have teeth for me?
Rabbit: Yes, here they are.
Wise One: Well done! From now on you and all your descendents will have large and strong teeth.
Rabbit: Wait….I want to be big and strong all over.
Wise One: (pulling on his ears) How is that?
Rabbit: Good!! Thank you, I am off to see Princess Elephant. Surely she will marry me now.
Wise One: So Rabbit went to see Princess Elephant.
Rabbit: Princess Elephant, what do you think now?
Wise One: Princess Elephant laughed at Rabbit. She told Rabbit that she could not marry him. She invited Rabbit to her wedding. She was going to marry Long Nose.
Rabbit: I am very, very sad. I won’t go to the wedding. I will marry Princess Rabbit.
Wise One: Rabbit married Princess Rabbit and they were very happy together. All of their children and their children’s children have had long ears and big teeth ever since.
All three together: And that’s how Rabbits got long ears.
