Where do we apply for free or reduced priced meals?
Families must complete a new application each school year, unless your child is automatically approved based on their MFIP, FDIPR Assistance or Food Stamp eligibility. The application is mailed to each household in August along with their PIN number.
A completed application can be mailed to the District Service Center, Nutrition Services Office at 2959 North Hamline Avenue, St. Paul, MN 55113. You may also send the application to the school office and they will forward it to the Nutrition Services Office.
You may apply for benefits at any time through the school year. You will be notified with the status of you application by mail.
Who develops the menus?
Breakfast and lunch menus are planned by the Coordinator and Assistant Coordinator of Nutrition Services. Input for these menus is received from many sources including students, parents, Nutrition Services staff, school staff and other school districts. All menus are planned to meet the Meal Pattern Requirements for breakfast and lunch established by the USDA.
Elementary menus are sent home each month. Secondary menus are posted in each cafeteria and are available in the school offices.
What are the meal pattern requirements?
Portions are determined by the meal pattern requirements established by the USDA. The portions served provide at least one third of the RDA for key nutrients. Each month we analyze our elementary menus for nutrient content and publish the results on the menu.

Common Questions About the Computerized System…
My child says that there is no money left in his account but I gave him a check yesterday. How can I check on this?
You can call the Nutrition Services cashier at your child's school. The cashier can track your check number to see if it has been entered. The cashier can also run an activity report of your child's account that will show the amount of money deposited or spent each day.
I have more than one child at a school. Do I have to write separate checks?
No. You can write one check per school but make sure each child's name and PIN are on the check. Indicate the amount that is to go into each account.
I have Children at different school. Do I have to write separate checks?
Yes.
My child brings a lunch from home and only needs to buy milk. How does he purchase milk only?
A pre-payment into the students account is required to purchase milk.
How does the system handle free or reduced price meals?
Students eligible for free or reduced price meals follow the same procedure as everyone else. Students eligible for reduced price meals will be free for breakfast and $.40 for lunch, therefore, they must make pre-payments into their accounts. Students eligible for free meals do not need to deposit money into their accounts to receive a breakfast or lunch.
Can my child purchase other items using his PIN such as snacks or a second lunch?
Yes. Middle and high schools have snacks available to purchase. Second lunches may also be purchased. A second lunch price is that of an adult meal because reimbursements are not available.
