Students and staff will gather around the flagpole at 10:00 a.m. to celebrate the 194th birthday of the Star Spangled Banner. The words were written on September 12, 1814 by Francis Scott Key as he watched the bombing of Fort McHenry during the war of 1812. By the “dawn’s early light”, he was elated to see the “broad stripes and bright stars” of the American flag still “gallantly streaming” in the breeze, and he penned the words that became our national anthem in 1931.
Students have been learning the words of the anthem over the last few years and have studied the eloquent but difficult words again this year.
On Monday, 9/15, members of the New Brighton VFW will present and raise the flag as students and staff recite the pledge and sing the anthem.
Please join us if you are able to help celebrate the birthday of our national anthem.
