Greetings to All Visitors to the Island Lake Web Site!

Dear Island Lake Families,
I’d like to highlight two of the special activities that we are focusing on at Island Lake.
Community Building
As in the past, Island Lake is organizing lessons throughout the year within our structure of Community Building. Our focus this year is on CARES (Cooperation, Assertion, Responsibility, Empathy, Self-Control). CARES is a component of Responsive Classroom, a community-building approach many of our teachers are using in their classrooms. Roughly once each month all of the school will read the same book and participate in a lesson to strengthen understanding and increase student-connectedness. This most recent focus is on Assertion. The book we chose to support this concept is Stand Tall Molly Lou Melon by Patty Lovell. It is the story of a little girl who learns how her differences help her succeed. You can help support our efforts by reading this book at home and talking about it with your child. Next week I will read Stephanie’s Ponytail by Robert Munsch to continue our school-wide discussion about being assertive.

Birthday Lunches
Of all the fun things I get to do as Principal of Island Lake, one of the best is Birthday Lunches. Birthday Lunches give me a chance to get to know students in a small group setting. When we meet in the Conference Room (on the “spinny chairs”) we talk about likes and dislikes, sports, family, vacation, and other fun topics. Starting at the end of this week students who attend with me will get a newly designed window cling. Students who have already had lunch with me will also get on every soon. I want to especially thank the PTA for their help in making Birthday Lunches so successful.

Sincerely,
Todd Durand
Principal
