So much of what is covered in this course is related in simple terms that everyone can relate too.  This book really changed the way I approach my kitchen. "What Einstein Told His Cook" & "What Einstein Told His Cook 2" by Robert L. Wolke.  ISBN:  0393011836 & 0393058697 (respectively).
This is a great narrative account of one mans life with chemistry. "Uncle Tungsten" by Oliver Sacks.  ISBN:  0375404481
