Cyber Safety- (link to powerpoint)

  1. Future Technology......What's new?   Let's say you are packing for a camping trip and you need a flashlight or you can't find your watch.  Maybe your bike is broken and you need a replacement part.  What do you do?  With a fabrication printer, you can build it at home on your computer and print it out.

  1. Cyber Literacy  - means evaluating the reliability of data.

Have you ever been to Mankato, Minnesota?  Maybe you were lucky enough to see the Sclare Fissure.  Maybe you visited the site of the pyramids, caught a glimpse of the nuclear submarines, or went scuba diving to see the underwater world.  If you are interested in the city of Mankato, visit the official city page.  The link is below.

How can you tell if a site is reliable?  Check the author of the site and the content.  More on evaluating websites can be found here:  http://www.wiredsafety.org/wiredlearning/Evaluation/index.html

  1. Textual Harrassment.   Definition.  The law will vary from state to state, but in California a single text message is enough to meet the definition of textual harrassment if the texter threatens physical harm or is obscene.  If the text does not fall into either of these categroies, the messages must be repeated to be considered textual harassment.  Intent is nother requiremtn included in most textual harassment definitions.  The law generally requires that the harasser intent the messages to be viewed as harassment.  Because of the need to prove intent, you should tell the harasser that you do nto want to speak to the person and to stop texting.  If the harasser persisits after this clear message, it will be easier to prove that the intent was to harass.
    1. "How can I tell if I am being textually harassed?"

Textual Harassment: ThatsNotCool.com is a good resource about textual harassment, as well as information for parents from a Today Show segment (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5un11ixfXvE).

6. Cyber Safety (Cyberfootprint)  or Digital footprint

On the Internet a digital footprint is the word used to describe the trail, traces or "footprints" that people leave online. This is information transmitted online, such as forum registration, e-mails and attachments, uploading videos or digital images and any other form of transmission of information — all of which leaves traces of personal information about yourself available to others online.

Did you know you are leaving your "footprint" everywhere you go on the internet?  It even happens when other people attach your name to something.  Google some people; yourself, friends, and family members.

Students, the next time you are online, check your own cyber footprint on the internet; other people are, your friends, family, future schools, and future employers......
