School Board meeting summary, August 26, 2008
More...Outdoor athletic facilities John Ward, director of human resources and operations, and Rick Berqual, maintenance/operations manager, gave an update on the Outdoor Athletic Facilities Task Force. Meetings were held with high school outdoor activities coaches or advisors, and District facilities have been toured. A summary of the needs identified at each site is being drafted and will be disseminated to representatives of the cities and outdoor athletic facilities user groups early this fall. Summer projects update Rick Berqual, maintenance/operations manager, reported that all summer projects are completed, and the District facilities are ready for students to arrive next week. Readiness for school Cabinet members reported on all aspects of school operations in preparation for the 2008-09 school year, including transportation services, nutrition services, human resources, facilities, technology and communications. All support areas are ready to welcome students next week. Other Post-Employment Benefits New accounting requirements and recent changes to Minnesota laws regarding Other Post-Employment Benefits (OPEB) prompt the School Board to investigate all options for managing these future liabilities. The Board will continue looking at options at upcoming Board meetings and work sessions. Summer work by teachers RoAnne Elliott, director of curriculum and instruction, and Superintendent Dan Hoverman gave a report on curriculum and professional development projects that involved teacher training/work during the summer. More than 200 elementary, middle and high school teachers participated in summer workshops and training. Enrollment update Carole Nielsen, director of finance, presented an enrollment update for the 2008-09 school year. Another enrollment update based on actual student counts will be presented at the September 4 work session. Policy review The Board is currently going through a process to review all Board policies. To date, the following policies have been reviewed: *EG-0001 – Purpose and Goal of Mounds View Public Schools *EG-0103 – Transportation *EG-0104 – School Attendance Areas *EG-0105 – School Year Calendar *EG-0106 – School Start Times The Board waived the second and third readings and adopted the following revised policies: *EG-0100 – Mission, Vision and Planning *EG-0101 – Strategic Planning and Oversight *EG-3104 - Harassment, Intimidation, Bullying, Violence and Other Forms of Personal Attack Thank you The Board accepted, with appreciation, gifts from Mounds View Mustang Club, Mounds View Basketball Association, Mounds View Hockey Boosters, Matthew Wheeler, Medtronic Foundation, Keith Dehnbostel, Norman Lind, Forrest Pape, Mark Becksma, Marianne Goren, Cindi and Jay Littlejohn, Cub Foods New Brighton, John & Rosemary Hunt, Cub Foods Arden Hills and Medtronic.
