Respect, Responsibility, and the Right to Learn

Student wins Viking visit

As part of a national campaign to raise awareness about the importance of eating a good breakfast, the National Dairy Council and the Minnesota dairy farmers, sponsored a sweepstakes for elementary-school-age students. Fourth grader Cassidy S was the Minnesota winner. In order to win, Cassidy visited a dairy related website, with the approval of her parents, and recorded what she ate for breakfast for five school days in a row. Due to her contributions, the fourth-grade students at Turtle Lake enjoyed a visit by Minnesota Vikings football player Tony Richardson in May.

Orchestra students fight hunger

Nearly 200 fifth-grade orchestra students from Island Lake and Turtle Lake Elementary Schools practiced hard this spring to help fight world hunger. As part of their preparation for their spring concert, students took pledges for each hour they practiced on their instrument during the months of March and April. In all, the musicians raised $2,270 for the Feed My Starving Children Foundation, enough to provide 15,136 meals for children or feed 40 children one meal a day for one year. Besides raising funds, the students increased their practice time – one student jumped from an average of five hours a month to 20. The orchestras are under the direction of teacher Sandy Collins.
