This year, Turtle Lake music teacher, Kathy Crockett had her hands full with 4th and 5th grade choirs, African Music Ensemble, and a year long artist-in-residency with Sowah Mensah. The choir sang at the Minnesota Twins Game in September and the Shoreview Town Hall tree lighting ceremony in November. Another highlight this year was when the choirs and African Music Ensemble recorded a CD! Mrs. Crockett also organized an all grade Holiday Sing-A-Long in December. |
Long-time orchestra director, Sandy Collins, also had a busy year with 4th and 5th grade orchestras. In December, the orchestra performed a Toon Town Holiday Concert. In April, the orchestra performed an Olympic concert. The school was also treated with a rare performance by the Mounds View High School Orchestra. |
At Turtle Lake, fifth grade students have the option of joining the band. The band has one large group practice a week along with weekly small group lessons. The band also held a variety of concerts including a Holiday Concert in December and a joint concert with Island Lake in April. |

Turtle Lake has many community partnerships which keep us active year round. This year, Turtle Lake was privileged enough to receive grants from both Target and Exxon. Each member of the third grade class received a dictionary courtesy of the Lion’s Club. We received a visit from Secretary of State, Mark Ritchie and partnered with the National Marrow Donor Program to hold the largest marrow donor drive in the state of Minnesota! In addition, each week, many members of the community volunteer to be reading buddies for Turtle Lake students. |
Student council is made up of two elected representatives from each classroom in grades 3-5. They keep busy year round with activities and meetings. This year the student council held many fundraisers including Pennies for Patients which raised money for children with Leukemia. They also worked at Culver’s for two nights in April and raised money for the school. |
The PTA is responsible for so many wonderful programs at Turtle Lake. They organize two book fairs each year, an all school carnival in March, the creation and distribution of our student directory, our foreign language program, a Gifts for Others program during the holidays, school spirit apparel, the school store, the Thoughtful Thursday staff appreciation program, the yearbook, and much more! |
