Art News

Hi! This is Miss Tillman, Mrs. Nara’s student teacher.  Well, my time here has almost come to an end. We have accomplished so much! This has been a very exciting time getting to know all of the classes and students, but it went very fast.  Halloween will be my last day.

For the last two weeks now, all of the classes, grades 1-5 have been learning about Australian Aboriginal Art.  I studied in an Australian high school for a few months, so I hope that I am able to give the students a little more insight.

Grades four and five drew and then cut out their own Australian animals that we are using as stencils.  We then take the stencil and sponge paint around it.  After that is dry, we will go over our painting with an end of a pencil to produce the dot painting the aboriginals are well known for. Grades one, two, and three are creating their own dot painting on a boomerang.  Each student will pick one Australian animal, and draw that on the top of their boomerang.  Then we will add the dot painting like the older grades.

In the hallways you can find:

Animal collages similar to the artist Eric Carle from Mrs. Klugow’s first grade class. We first read the book t\The Hungry Caterpillar to get our inspiration, and then we learned how to mix paints to make secondary colors.

Miss Halvorsen’s class second grade class has beautiful turtle paintings up.  They learned about organic and geometric shapes.

Mr. Pluim’s third grade class has their fish paintings on display. They looked at the work of artists Marc Chagall, Paul Klee, and Winslow Homer.

The fourth graders made their own museums after learning about architects Frank Lloyd Wright and Frank Gehry. You can find Ms. Darden’s class museums in the hallway.

Finally the fifth graders made the pastel landscapes that are in the hallway. The students looked at the work of Vincent VanGogh, Winslow Homer, Henri Rousseau, and Claude Monet. Student work from Mrs. Desmond and Mrs. Coyle’s class are shown.  At the beginning of the school year, the fifth graders also learned about artist Andy Goldsworthy. A few of the outdoor sculptures from Ms. Vanderport’s class are hanging out for everyone to see.

As you can tell, we have been very busy learning about art and different artists.  I thank you all for such a wonderful time here at Turtle Lake.
