Library Media Specialists

Our librarians (a.k.a. Library Media Specialists) wear many hats: they are readers, teachers, collaborators, communicators, AV/techies, book lovers, author groupies, and so much more!

LMC Paras

There’s always a friendly para in the library waiting to help you. Whom you see will depend upon when you visit.

Welcome to the LMC, where lifelong readers, researchers, and learners are created.

The Turtle Lake LMC is a resource center for students and staff. Students work with the media staff to develop an appreciation for books and related materials. Students begin to develop research and study skills using the variety of materials in the LMC.

There are several computer stations in the LMC, as well as an adjacent eMac lab for Information Literacy instruction and classroom use. In addition, a wireless lab is available for classroom checkout.

How often do students visit the LMC?

Students usually come once weekly with their classroom teacher for book checkout. They also may visit during Information Literacy time with their IL Specialist, or as part of a small group of learners with a parent volunteer, or even individually.

How many books may students check out?

In general, kindergarteners may check out one book, first and second graders may have two, third graders may have three, and fourth and fifth graders may check out no more than four items. Exceptions are made as needed to best fill student and/or teacher needs. In order to fairly serve all students, we ask that a student have only one cat/dog book, I Spy/Where’s Waldo book, comic, or magazine out at a time.

How many books and materials does the LMC have?

We have over 39,000 items. This includes books, magazines, and AV materials. We check over 300 items out on an average day.

What do 5th grade helpers do and how do I become one?

The grade 5 teachers let us know who will be volunteering from their classrooms. Classrooms help out on a rotating basis. The 5th grade student volunteers come after lunch during their recess time. Depending on the day’s needs, students may deliver materials to classrooms, put away series books, organize magazines, dust and straighten shelves, sharpen pencils, retrieve wayward slider sticks, or fill the scrap paper at the computer lookup stations.

What do parent volunteers do?

They do lots of shelving! (Students: Having shelved so many books, these parents know our collection. They are wonderful resources.) Volunteers may also check in/out books, repair materials, stamp/cover books, assist with year-end inventory, help with special projects, and so much more! They are a great support, which helps all of us serve our students better.

What is the Birthday Book Club?

The Birthday Book Club offers an opportunity for your child to give a book to Turtle Lake School in celebration of his or her birthday. The Birthday Book Club is open to all students, friends, parents, grandparents, and staff—everybody has birthdays! Books may even be given for occasions other than birthdays.

WHY? The Birthday Book Club allows students (and friends, parents, grandparents, and staff!) to share books and ideas important to them. It also increases the collection of our media center.

HOW? Donations can be made at any time. Books may be given in three ways:

1. Selected from the Birthday Book drawer in the LMC.

2. Ordered directly from the Turtle Lake LMC.

3. Ordered and purchased elsewhere and brought to the LMC.

Please note these details about donations:

· Checks should be made out to Turtle Lake School for $16.00 and given to the child's teacher or the media center staff.

· Label the envelope BIRTHDAY BOOK CLUB.

· The giver's name will be displayed on the inside cover of the book and a list of Birthday Book Club donations will appear periodically in "Turtle Tales."

· The child will be the first person to check out the book.

BOOK CLUB FAQs:

Q: If I know what book I want to donate and I'm going to the bookstore anyway, why would I want to order the book from the LMC?

A: You don't have to, but a book ordered by us will be hardcover and specially bound for libraries. This means that the book will be strong enough to withstand many, many, many readings.

Q: What is the Birthday Book drawer?

A: The Birthday Book drawer is where we keep several books that have been already selected, ordered and purchased by our library media specialists, Julie Reimer and Kay Trapp. These books are just waiting to be chosen by that special someone.
