http://www.trelease-on-reading.com/

Jim Trelease, a nationally acclaimed reading expert, has a wealth of information regarding reading aloud available on his web site.

He provides suggestions for reading aloud, gives information about why reading aloud is so essential to a child's development, and recommends ways to begin reading aloud. His popular book, The Read-Aloud Handbook, goes into greater detail on all these subjects and contains a terrific treasury of read-aloud ideas.

http://www.scholastic.com/readingreport.htm

Coming to the library is associated with storytime for most children. They love sitting on the reading steps to listen to a story and view its illustrations. Their engagement with the characters and plot are evident in their attentive postures and wide eyes. Recent research indicates that 40% of children between the ages of 5 and 8 read for fun every day. Sadly, among 9 to 11 year olds, that number decreases to 29%. A steady decline occurs through age 17. As parents and educators, we have a profound impact on students’ attitudes and behaviors in regard to reading. By taking time to read aloud with children and by modeling reading ourselves, we can boost their reading and vocabulary skills and influence their lifelong reading habits.
