Library Media Center News

Volunteers

Volunteers make a big difference in the Valentine Hills library media center. Parents can volunteer in the IMC on a weekly schedule or on special projects, as needed. Volunteers check books out to students, check in books that have been returned, shelve library books, and help with a variety of other projects that make the VH library media center a welcoming place to students and staff including:

  • Repair books
  • Help students find books
  • Design posters and book displays
  • Prepare supplies for projects
  • Process new books
  • Locate books for classroom projects
  • Assist students using the electronic catalog
  • And on and on...

Results of Metronet's School Library Media Program Census include the following statistics:

  • There is a statistically significant relationship between higher reading scores and larger school media center budgets at the elementary level.
  • Minnesota students are using books that are older than they are-and in some cases, older than their teachers. The average copyright date of materials at all levels in 1985.
  • Average per pupil spending for books in elementary schools is $9.35, about 50% of the average cost of one book.
