• Hi, welcome to Regular English Ten. This is a co-taught class with Mr. Bennett and Mrs. Zagaros here for all three periods (1-3). We have been co-teaching together for almost ten years and am excited to do it another year. 

    Here are the units that we will hopefully get through before 2nd semester begins. The order listed is what we hope to accomplish but things could change due to any future covid updates. I prefer to list the syllabus here in the content portion of the teacher page in case I need to make changes.  


    Unit One: Short Stories. All students will have a vocabulary worksheet before the story and a practice quiz after the story is read. Both assignments will be graded in the practice category. This unit is a good way to ease into the semester. No performance-scored assignments will be done with the short story unit. 

    1. The Pedestrian by Ray Bradbury

    2. The Bet by Anton Chekhov

    3. The Piece of String by Guy de Maupassant


    Unit Two: Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes

    This is an abridged version of the novel. We will have a study guide and a couple of practice quizzes throughout the book. We will begin the journal writing assignments with this book. 


    Unit Three: Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. (We have the movie version to show along the way)

    This unit will include a study guide that each student is responsible to complete (practice category) as well as several practice quizzes throughout.

    There will be a short Final Test at the completion of the novel. This will be the first performance-graded assignment. 

    We end the unit with a Five Paragraph Essay. The essay will be written in stages to ensure each student is moving along in the proper fashion. We encourage every student to show one of us each paragraph before they move onto the next one. The essay will be the second performance-graded assignment of the semester.


    Unit Four: Journals. 

    We will be asking students to write journals throughout the semester (graded in the practice category). The journals will be guided with a question/topic that relates to the story we are reading at the time. 


    Unit Five: The Freedom Writers Diary by Erin Gruwell.

    This will be the last book read during the first semester. This is a pretty long novel that is broken up into four sections. The book is a true account of a group of students and their teacher in the 1990's. Each section is based on each of the four years of high school. There is a good movie that we will show along the way as well.

    There will be a study guide and practice quizzes with each of the sections read.

    The unit will have a Final Test that will count as the last performance graded assignment of the semester.
