Life Below Freezing

    Class Description:

    Northern Minnesota winters are snow-covered and quite cold. What happens to all of the plants and animals during the winter? Do they die? Students study nature's way of dealing with snow and cold, and they perform experiments that help them understand special adaptations to winter. Don't be like the bears - come out of hibernation and discover Life Below Freezing. 

    Learner Objectives:

    • Students are introduced to four coping strategies used by plants and animals to survive a Northern Minnesota winter.
    • Students are introduced to examples of relationships between several plant and animal species that makes survival possible in the Northwoods winter.
    • Students are introduced to how individual species are adapted to live in specific ecosystems.
