    HIGHVIEW PARENT MEETING

    We would like to invite all parents to join us for our next Highview Parent Group Meeting on Tuesday, October 18 from 6:30-7:30 PM in our Learning Center.  Alison Feigh, of the Jacob Wetterling Foundation, will be presenting an anti-bullying and internet safety message to our parents.  Alison will be presenting a similar message to our 6th grade students earlier in the day.  It’s such an important topic.  We hope you can join us!!


    PARENT TEACHER COMMUNICATION HOURS

    7TH GRADE PARENTS

    Laurentian is coming up fast.  If you are sending prescription medication with your student, we need them to school by Tuesday, October18th.  They must be labeled and in their original packaging.   Any questions, please call our Licensed Health Care Specialist, Keri Rudnick at 651-621-6704.


    NOTE FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE

    In the fall, we often see a rise in head lice occurrence.  Although head lice are most common in younger students, it still occurs within our older student population.  There have been several cases identified within Highview this year.  The health office is asking parents to notify them of any new cases.  This enables us to partner with you and support your efforts, to assist us with identification of other cases and allows us to provide you with information regarding treatment and future prevention of lice recurrence.  


    SEPPAC MEETINGS

    Mounds View Public Schools and the Special Education Parent and Professional Advisory Council (SEPPAC) invite all parents to attend the 2017 SEPPAC Meetings.

    October 13, 2016   Parent to Parent Gathering    6:45 to 8:15 PM, at Snail Lake Education Center

    You are not alone!   This meeting is designed for parents to come together to help each other.  There will be short presentations and then discussion groups on how parents can help each other to navigate the system and advocate for their own child.   Come hear other parents’ stories and experiences.

    Chris Lennox, Superintendent of Mounds View Public Schools, will attend the SEPPAC meeting and will share his views on special education in the District. He will be available to hear parent views. 

    April 20, 2017   Post-Secondary Planning: School and Community Resources 6:45 to 8:15 PM, at Snail Lake Education Center

    Back by popular demand, this meeting will have students sharing their experience in a variety of post-secondary options as well as information about resources available to students and their parents for their own planning.


    COMMUNITY ED UPDATES

    Registration for Co-ed Volleyball is now open.  Practices run Monday through Thursday and begin on Monday, October 31.  Registration is available online at https://www.moundsviewschools.org/Page/182 or paper forms can be obtained in the office.

    After-School Ski and Snowboarding Program is open to all 6th-12th grade students.  The cost of $228.00 includes 8 lift tickets, ski corral, 1 lesson/assessment and motor coach transportation to and from Afton Alps. 

    Equipment can be rented for $15, which includes a helmet.  Buses depart after school.  Students must ride the bus to and from the ski area.  Buses will leave after school and return to school by 9:15 PM.

    HIGHVIEW HALLOWEEN DRESS CODE – MONDAY, OCTOBER 31, 2016

    **The regular school dress code applies on any spirit day*

    1.  No masks.

    2.  If you face paint, you must be recognizable.  NO face paint put on at school.

    3.  Hats only if it matches outfit/costume.

    4.  Nothing inappropriate that makes fun of someone or some other group.

    5.  No weapons or anything that resembles a weapon.

    6.  No violent themes.

    7.  No hair spray used at Highview---home only.

    8.  Costumes are to be put on at home—not at school.

    9.  Staff members have the right to ask you to change or eliminate parts of your costume if deemed inappropriate or unsafe.

    10.  Costumes need to comply with the Highview Dress Code.


    START TIMES ENGAGEMENT
    This fall, the School Board has launched a community engagement process to hear feedback on school start times. In the first step of the process, more than 2,300 people shared nearly 8,000 thoughts. Now through October 16, the public is invited to assign stars to the thoughts provided by the community. This will help the School Board get a sense of shared values and priorities in the school communities. Parents have been invited via e-mail to assign stars to thoughts about start times online. Parents can also visit www.moundsviewschools.org/starttimes to access the link or to follow progress on this issue throughout the fall.

    YOUTH NIGHT FOR MOUNDS VIEW VOLLEYBALL

    Mounds View Volleyball Youth Night is Monday, October 17th Come join us for a fun night of volleyball, root beer floats and giveaways! Freshman teams play at 4:00 PM, B-Squad and JV games at 5:30 PM and Varsity game at 7:00 PM.


    NEED HELP WITH HOLIDAY TOYS AND GIFTS FOR YOUR CHILDREN?

    If you need help with holiday toys and gifts for your children, Ralph Reeder Food Shelf’s Operation Joy program can help.  There are two ways to register your children:

    ·        During any daytime food shelf appoint from November 1 through December 2 by calling 651-621-7451 to set up your appointment.  You will receive food and your toy pick up times the same day. 

    ·         Wednesdays, November 9th, 16th or 30th from 12:30 to 2:00 PM there will be walk-in registration for toys.  No need to make an appointment.  Please bring:  a picture ID for yourself, current piece of mail (proof of residence), and some form of identification for your children (medical cards, school ID, birth certificate or Social Security Cards). 

    Important – Your children may only be registered for one holiday toy program.  Toy registration ends December 2nd.  If you have any questions, please call the Ralph Reeder Food Shelf at 651-621-7451.

    AFTER-SCHOOL TRANSPORTATION

    Now that after school activities are in full swing, here are a few reminders regarding transportation.   If you are picking your child up from an after-school activity, please be sure to be at Highview by 4:00 PM for pick-up, unless otherwise notified by the activity adviser.  Students who are assigned a regular school bus are allowed to take the activity bus home on days that they are involved in an after-school activity.  Activity bus routes are longer than the regular bus routes, so it will take your child longer to get home on the activity bus.  We encourage all students to participate in after-school activities at Highview, please talk with your child about participating if not already involved!

    POSITIVE PARENTING OF TEENS

    Parenting teens is hard—even when everything is going well.  It can feel impossible when difficulties arise.  Join us for an 8-session course facilitated by Marty Spicer, MA – Marriage and Family Therapy, and conducted in partnership with other parents like you.

                                        Northwest Youth and Family Services, 3490 Lexington Ave N., Shoreview, MN

    Participants will learn how to successfully parent their teen with less stress and more joy.  This parent-only class emphasizes hands-on learning and practical problem-solving skills.  Couples/Partners are encouraged to attend together.  The class is limited to 12 families with youth in the Mounds View School District.  Cost is $80 per parent group and includes a workbook.  Scholarships are available for those unable to afford the fee.  Call for details.
