Vote New Brighton residents can vote now

This fall, voters will consider the School Board’s facilities bond proposal to add room at all schools throughout the District in response to rising enrollment, aging facilities and stressed capacity.

But thanks to early voting in New Brighton, residents of New Brighton can vote today.

From now through November 6, residents of New Brighton can vote in person at New Brighton City Hall, 803 Old Highway 8, NW.

    Hours of voting:
    Monday through Friday                       8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
    Saturday, November 4                        10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Learn more about the facilities proposal at www.moundsviewschools.org/facilities.

    Second Step:

This month, our schoolwide theme is skills for learning: listening, focusing attention, using self-talk to stay on-task, and being assertive when asking for help with a learning task.  In our morning announcements and school assembly, we'll be reminding students of these skills, which help students be successful learners.

Second Step lessons teach skills for learning.  You'll be receiving Home Links describing why these skills are important and including fun activities to do with your child to practice them.  We hope you enjoy them!

Please tell your child's teacher if you'd like more suggestions about supporting skills for learning at home.

National School Lunch Week - Oct. 9-13

In celebration of National School Lunch Week:

We would like to invite all parents, family members and/or any special person to come and have lunch with their child/children. No reservations are necessary.

    Adult lunch is $3.85

Bel Air Elementary provides an opportunity for students to have their vision and hearing tested each year.

Volunteers are needed for Bel Air’s Vision and Hearing Screening on Tuesday and Wednesday, October 24 and 25. No experience is necessary and training will be provided.

If you are interested, please watch for the link to the Signup Genius in the parent communication from your child's teacher.  The link will also be in the next Bel Air Update.

Volunteers:  please be sure to have your background check done with Sue Cameron in the office if you have not yet done so. The background check is good for the duration your child is attending Bel Air.

Please make certain your student wears any prescribed glasses or contacts for the screening on Tuesday, October 24, and Wednesday, October 25, 2016.

Students with vision and hearing deficits are often not aware of their problem, so they do not complain or seek help. Early identification and treatment can prevent or alleviate many of these problems. And learning is easier when students can see and hear clearly!

    The following screenings are scheduled:

Vision screening will be done for all 1st, 3rd, and 5th grade students, as well as any students referred by teachers, parents, or case managers.

Hearing screening will be done for all 1st grade students, as well as any students referred by teachers, parents, or case managers.

Any student will be screened if there is a parent or teacher request, so please contact the school health office 651-621-6304 if you have a concern about your child’s vision or hearing.

The Licensed School Nurse reviews the screening results and sends home a written referral if further medical evaluation is recommended. If you have any questions, please contact Kathy Knutson, Licensed School Nurse, at 651-621-6378.

The start of fall means the beginning of our Reading Buddies Program at Bel Air Elementary. We hope you will consider volunteering for this program.

There has been a slight change in how the program will work this year.  Volunteers will be meeting with students on Tuesdays only, from 10:00 - 11:00.  You can choose to be here for an hour and meet with 2 students or stay for half an hour and meet with just one student. Volunteers and students will meet together in the IMC (library) for some reading fun and to get to know each other.  With the new time, Reading Buddies will not take place over lunch and recess.

We will be kicking off our 2017- 2018 Reading Buddies program with an orientation on Tuesday, November 7th at 10:00 am, in the IMC (library).  Reading Buddies will begin the following week, November 14th.

Please fill out the form below, if you are interested in becoming a Reading Buddy this year.

Please contact Andrea Johnson or Sue Scott if you have questions or would like more information.

REMINDER to everyone to save those little pink BOX TOPS.  Each one is worth .10, over the years Bel Air has raised thousands of dollars through BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION, one dime at a time.  Please place your box tops in a small bag or envelope and bring them to your homeroom.  Each homeroom teacher has a special bag to collect BOX TOPS from your child.
PS, the Kemps Milk Cap program and Campbell's  Labels for Education have both been discontinued.
    Thank you, Barbara Walsh

Thank you so much to our Bel Air and Valentine Hills Orchestra and Band parents for helping us to implement our drop-off and pick-up procedures in our Highview Middle School Parking Lot.  These changes are helping us to provide a safer environment for students, parents and staff.

    • Parents must drop students off in the small parking lot in front of the school. We are asking parents not to enter the bus lanes.
    • Parents will no longer be allowed in the bus loading area between the hours of 7:15 - 8 a.m. and 2:15 - 3 p.m.
    • Parents using the parent pick-up/drop-off area will now be required to take a right turn only when exiting the parking lot.
    • When dropping off or picking up a student, please pull ahead to the furthest open space.  This helps alleviate congestion and helps things to move along more efficiently.

Highview Band/Orchestra students and parents will greet your students.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation.  If you have any questions please feel free to send me an email at sheila.eller@moundsviewschools.org
