Second Step
This month, our schoolwide theme is empathy. In our morning announcements and school assembly we’ll be reminding students to have empathy, identify their own and others’ feelings, notice and respect same and different feelings, and show compassion. Compassion involves saying kind words or doing something helpful to show you care how another person feels. When students can identify, understand, and respond in a caring way to how someone else is feeling, it helps create a positive and accepting school climate.
Second Step lessons specifically teach about empathy. You’ll be receiving Home Links describing why empathy is important and including fun activities to do with your child to help them identify feelings and practice showing empathy and compassion. We hope you find them helpful.
Please tell your child’s teacher if you have any questions about how you can help your child learn to identify feelings and show empathy and compassion at home.

Bel Air Elementary LEGO League Junior
LEGO League Jr is a STEM program for Bel Air first and second graders. Teams of 6 students explore a challenge topic, build and program a motorized LEGO model, and create a poster that shows what they have learned. At the end of the season, teams present their project to judges at a local non-competitive exhibition.
Throughout the 12 week program, your child will learn teamwork, critical thinking and presentation skills, along with gaining experience in beginner-level programming using a block-based programming language. Parents join the weekly team meetings to provide guidance and inspiration. LEGO League Jr is a great way to reinforce skills used in the classroom while also strengthening parent-child bonds.
Bel Air Band and Orchestra families
The parking lot improvements that were completed at Highview Middle School over the summer have contributed to a more organized and safe student drop-off and pick-up routine. We ask that parents please use the drop off lanes designated for student drop off when bringing your student to band or orchestra at Highview in the morning. Please do not use the visitor parking lot in the center for drop off.
In an effort to continually improve this process, we ask all parents to please stay in the lane closest to the curb/the school when dropping off or picking up students. We do not want students crossing in front of vehicles so it is very important that all cars remain in the lane closest to the school/curb. The outside lanes should only be used to exit the line after your student has exited the car.
Please see the diagram below for more detail.
Thank you for helping us during this transition with our new parking lot. Your student’s safety is our first priority.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation. If you have any questions please feel free to send me an email at sheila.eller@moundsviewscho

Riding the Bus and Food/DrinkWhile riding the bus, students are expected to keep all food and drink in their backpacks. This expectation prevents choking incidents, exposure to life-threatening allergens, and promotes bus sanitation.Show your school spirit

Student Safety:
In order to ensure the safety of students during arrival and dismissal, we will be closing the lower parking lot from 8:05 – 8:35 a.m. and 3:05 – 3:35 p.m. ALL students being transported by parents to and from school need to be dropped off/ picked up using the carpool lane in the back of the building. We appreciate your support in using the carpool lane to ensure the safety of all.
