A Message from Principal Abbott: End-of-Year Update

Hello Island Lake families,

You continue to be in my thoughts and I sincerely hope your family is doing well. With distance learning being our reality through the end of the school year, we have been working to come up with a plan to provide students with the opportunity for closure to the school year. We also want to make sure to honor our fifth graders as they wrap up their time as Island Lake students.

Grades 1-4 Farewell Opportunity: We will be setting aside June 2-3, 8:00 am - 6:00 pm, as a time for students in grades 1-4 to drive by the front of our school to wave to teachers and return library books or other materials, with the exception of Chromebooks. If you have something to return, please try to put it in your trunk or the back of your vehicle so we have limited person to person contact. Classroom teachers will let you know when they will be at school in case you want to plan to arrive when they are present. I realize this may mean more than one trip to school for some families, but we want to provide the opportunity to say good-bye for those who want it. There is no expectation that you participate, we are happy to collect library books or materials when we return to school in the fall. In addition, if you don’t have anything to return, we’d still love to have you drive through and wave!

Fifth Grade Send Off: June 4 from 2:00-6:00 pm is dedicated to a special fifth grade send off. Staff will be in front of the building (safely distanced) as families drive through for a heartfelt farewell. I hear Thunder, the Island Lake mascot, is even making an appearance. Each fifth grade student will receive a t-shirt as part of the send off. We are looking forward to sending our fifth graders out in style.

Please note: We are not collecting Chromebooks this spring. Students will keep Chromebooks over the summer, as some students may want to continue to utilize them for learning opportunities. All students, including fifth graders, will be expected to bring their Chromebook to school when we return this fall. If you are not going to be in the Mounds View district next year, please contact our office staff at 651-621-7000 to arrange a time to drop off your child’s Chromebook.

If you have questions, feel free to reach out to me, our office staff, or your child’s teacher.

Warm Regards,

Kristi Abbott
